Who we are
For more than a half century, Trout Unlimited—a grassroots sportsmen’s conservation organization—has worked to improve trout and salmon habitat across the United States, following the motto, “take care of the fish, and the fishing will take care of itself.” Today, TU is the premier coldwater conservation organization in the United States, with more than 150,000 members in more than 30 states. TU also is an acknowledged leader in collaborating with the agricultural producers in the West to find creative solutions that benefit both fisheries and producers’ bottom lines.Through cooperation, not conflict, TU and its farm and ranch partners are pioneering a new, collaborative vision of conservation in the West—one that sustains healthy rivers, rural communities and our rich outdoors heritage for the future. How we work
Trout Unlimited partners with farmers, ranchers and irrigation companies on pragmatic, voluntary, and market-driven solutions that benefit ag operations as well as fish and wildlife habitat. Among the proven, win-win solutions that are making a difference across the West:
Protect
Trout Unlimited works to preserve the best habitat in the West—watersheds and wild places that are home to North America’s incredible fish and wildlife populations. By working with key partners, Trout Unlimited strives to protect these last best places for future generations of anglers.
Reconnect
A large-scale, landscape vision is Trout Unlimited’s philosophy for how we see river ecosystems. Reconnecting fragmented streams and tributaries and improving fish passage is a critical part of our conservation work—because a river united is greater than the sum of its disconnected parts.
Restore
By working effectively in on-the-ground partnerships, providing resources and expertise, we help local landowners and communities restore degraded habitat and boost healthy flows so that streams and rivers can once again be thriving trout and salmon fisheries.
Science
Through the expertise of TU’s dedicated science team, we monitor population resources, habitat conditions, and future impacts to angling. This helps us identify priority areas of need for our protect, reconnect, and restore work.
